ANN MANSOLINO: Symbolic Autobiography

In the artist's words: Through my photographs, I explore the relationship between the internal self and external ideas of past, present, identity, memory, and place. The images are part of an ongoing series of constructed portraits and self-portraits that give visual, photographic form to lived internal experience. They function as a symbolic autobiography: they do not depict what particular life events looked like, but rather what they felt like, or could have felt like, in moments of introspection, aspiration, recollection, and dislocation.

Traces of Creation: phenomena

Using the medium of macro digital photography, Leslie explores the vibrational nature of our world and the idea of resonance as a universal creative force.  She has been exploring light as subject for ten years and has watched as the images have become ever more complex.  Interested in the physical nature of Light and its philosophical implications, she set off with camera in hand to explore what causes the diversity of shapes and marks emanating within the light around us.

Muse

Muse

Verb: To consider something thoughtfully

Noun: A source of artistic inspiration

One origin of the word muse is the 14th Century Middle English musen, which meant to mutter, gaze meditatively on, and be astonished.  This is a great description of what we do in museums.  In mythology, the Muses were nine goddesses who symbolized the arts and sciences. Today, a muse is a person or place that serves as an artist's inspiration.  Writers, painters, musicians, and other artists may have muses. Muse can also refer to thinking deeply. If you muse about something, you're giving it serious thought. You can't muse in five seconds. Musing, by definition, takes time.  Artists muse on certain ideas for years.  These photos represent the things and ideas that I muse on, and that have been sources of inspiration for me.  I hope they inspire musing in you as well.

Paper Dreams

My desire to create portraits that aren't direct and true provides me with a good reason to use Lith materials as my medium.  This darkroom technique can produce results that show an altered reality in the final outcome, bringing forth an illusion for the viewer, and a misrepresentation of accuracy.  By photographing through diffusion materials and then printing with Lith chemistry on suitable papers, I can achieve what I'm searching for in creating my 'paper dreams.'

Medusa Workshop

Embodying Medusa Workshop
with Kathleen Prophet and Amy Palko

Medusa, no longer a bloodless bodiless Monster, in this workshop we will explore, awaken, and embody our original Medusa nature – our instinctual bodily wisdom and power - through a depth process of embodied arts and photography.

What we've lost from Medusa is her story. We have lost her side of things. We only know her through the voice of the patriarchy. She has been frozen out and silenced. Isn't it time we got to know her better?

From Revolutionary Lips

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Red Thread Voices was birthed in early 2014, as I became more and more intrigued by the presence of Lilith and her importance for contemporary women. In my role as a Goddess Guide, I had become increasingly aware of the difficulties women encounter when they try to articulate their desire, their embodied truths, their lived experience. I saw all the ways in which we stifle and silence ourselves. And I saw the roots of that in the collective conditioning that informs what it means to be a woman in the 21st Century.

AMBIGUOUS RELATIONSHIPS: Sacred Body/Sacred Ground

Artist Statement: My photographs are spiritual metaphors that explore the relationship between self, other and the sometimes vast space in between, which both contain them and set them free from one another. The combinations resonate willfully yet unknowingly with each other, expanding past the borders that confine them, creating a new space with metaphysical boundaries. The ambiguous relationship is both mine with the subject and the viewers with the relationship between images, creating an emotional rather than physical connection between pairings, hopefully asking more questions than they answer.

My Personal Oregon

While my images are taken outside with available light, and many of my images contain a horizon line, I don’t consider myself a traditional landscape photographer or a nature photographer. Finding the right image is not about capturing beauty, it is about finding a connection with what you are photographing.

"Cómo juegan los niños"

Artist Statement: My primary job as a pediatrician has always been how to keep kids safe and healthy. The more I travel to less developed countries, the more I realize these 2 adjectives may not always coincide. These children roam and play with a sense of carefree fearlessness. They play with the most simple of objects but their imaginations run wild. These images remind me of the magical qualities of being a kid. Hence the project was born "Cómo juegan los niños"
